Summertime at Last!

I'm flicking through the radio trying to find a good song as we zoom down the highway.

"Oooo, I love this one! Turn it up!" Lanie urges.

I turn it up loud and the rhythmic beats rock the car, pleasing our ears.

Let's go to the beach-each, let's go get away. They say, what they gonna say?!

We all belted out the song at the top of our lungs, making people in passing cars send strange looks our way. Woops, I guess we forgot our windows were rolled down! Oh well, we're having too much fun to stop! As we dance in our seats, a glimpse of the bright blue lake comes into view, and our car is filled with screams and our excitement is far from contained.

Once we've reached the beach and pull into a parking spot, we explode out of the car, and eagerly grab everything from the trunk. Our eager hands grasp onto umbrellas, folding chairs, towels, and beach bags. Our flip-flopped feet pound the cement and we're like a screaming heard of fangirls as we bolt towards the sand.

As soon as we spot an empty area, we drop everything in our arms and frantically blow up the floatable pool chairs. We throw off our t-shirts and dresses that were covering our patterned swimsuits and we splash into the water.

The water is so clear I can see my toes when I look down, but it's so cold that my whole body tenses up and I'm practically paralyzed. Luckily for me, Julie comes running in and pounces on me, sending me face first into the freezing water! As I burst up I'm choking on my laughter and I send a wave of water towards her, soaking her as much as she soaked me. After being dunked for about the billionth time, I'm finally used to the chilly temperature of the water; it's refreshing and definitely keeps you wide awake!

Swimming in the lake is one of the best things ever and it's the most fun we've had  in a long time, but as we use up all of our energy our hunger lingers in our stomachs, growling louder and louder every waking minute. We drag ourselves regretfully out of the water, only to be welcomed by mouth-watering sandwiches perfectly cut into triangles and layered with cheddary cheese and juicy sliced tomatoes. Tomato juice from my sandwich drips down my neck and the lettuce flops out and lands in my lap. My face is priceless and Julie laughs so hard that her juice squirts out of her nose, which sends us all into a fit of contagious laughter. Our lunch is accompanied by salty potato chips and chilled juice that fill our stomachs to the brim, making us lean back, too lethargic to move.

However, we spot the pristine-white wrappers of popsicles peeking out of the cooler, and we can't resist. Our hands plunge into the cooler and we swiftly rip off the wrappers, revealing vibrantly bright popsicles that will soon be licked to nothing but wooden sticks. It's not too long before we head back into the water for round two.

We're in for so long that our fingers and toes look like the wrinkliest prunes that you've ever seen, and my sopping wet hair slaps my face in the sun. The summer is finally here, and we've been counting down the days for far too long! It's here at last, and I never want it to end! I fall back into the water, and smile as the sun warms up my body right before I sink into the water, still smiling. Summer is here and I don't ever want to let it go.
